No, not THAT Chris Carpenter…

No, not THAT Chris Carpenter…

You can follow Carpenter on Twitter: @ccarp37 So we finally know who we’ll be getting in exchange for letting Theo head out to Chicago… Chris Carpenter, Cubs pitcher. Our new Chris Carpenter even has the same middle name (John) as the other Chris Carpenter, but ours is ten years younger. Hopefully he can live up to the other Chris Carpenter in time – he seems to have had a promising start. Just twenty-six years old, Carpenter broke into the bigs at the end of last season, and tossed 9.2 innings over ten games, recording a 2.79 ERA, 7 walks, and…

2012 Bill James Projections – Red Sox Bullpen

2012 Bill James Projections – Red Sox Bullpen

Off the Monster’s, Kayla, breaks down the ever-present Pitching of the Red Sox. Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow, so I figured I’d better wrap up this segment – with a few disclaimers: despite the fact that we now know Daniel Bard is preparing to be a starter, he will be listed here, as James projected his numbers as a reliever; this is also true of Alfredo Aceves, who has expressed interest in starting again but might be more valuable in the bullpen. RHP Alfredo Aceves: 2011: 10-2, 114 IP, 42 BB, 80 SO, 2.61 ERA, 2 saves 2012 projection: 8-5,…

Enjoy your retirement, Tim Wakefield

Enjoy your retirement, Tim Wakefield

I think you all know how I feel about Tim Wakefield. He’s been a part of the Red Sox since I was five years old.  I literally cannot remember a Red Sox team without Wake tossing the knuckler. But it was time. Tim had a terrible second half last year, going 2-5 post All Star break, and he only won 4 games in 2010, with 10 losses. However, Wakefield has been well worth the few stinkers over the last few years, as he’s been instrumental for seventeen. Wake has been a starter, a middle-reliever, a mop-up guy, and even a…

2012 Bill James Projections – Red Sox Rotation

2012 Bill James Projections – Red Sox Rotation

I’ve waited long enough to see if we’ll be getting any new and exciting pitching additions – Spring Training is fast approaching (and Lester is already in camp!), so it’s high time to finish out the 2012 projections. LHP Jon Lester:2011 projection: 14-9, 31 starts, 204 IP, 3.53 ERA, 82 BB, 193 SO2011: 15-9, 31 starts, 191.2 IP, 3.47 ERA, 75 BB, 182 SO2012 projection: 15-9, 31 starts, 192 IP, 3.61 ERA, 74 BB, 180 SOI thought James was being too pessimistic about Lester in his projection for 2011, and he turned out to be pretty much right on the…

Super Bowl Sunday: Please Don’t Riot. Please. Don’t.

Super Bowl Sunday: Please Don’t Riot. Please. Don’t.

Over the past eight years of working in higher education in Boston (yes friends, my full time job is not in sports), I have worked my fair share of university-sponsored viewing parties for the World Series, ALCS and Super Bowl. Part of working these parties is convincing students to attend them and imploring them to lay off the rioting in the streets (part of the reason why we hold them.) Achieving both goals can be hard. Most times schools decide to share “Please Don’t Riot” messages via an all-university email, and over the past few years I’ve had to review or…

Super Bowl Sports Gear: Women Apparently Love Tom Brady Jerseys.

Super Bowl Sports Gear: Women Apparently Love Tom Brady Jerseys.

Leading up to Sunday’s Super Bowl, what NFL  jerseys were hot in the world of online shopping? Not surprisingly, New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady is very popular with online jersey buyers. Nextag.com rounded up some figures and shared them with members of the media throughout the web. Here are some of the facts and figures I found interesting: • In terms of Patriots’ gear, “Tom Brady continues to be the most sought-after jersey with 8 of the top 10 selling items, followed by Wes Welker.” • Women’s merchandise account for seven of the top ten most popular Patriots’ items sold online. The most…

Take A Sick Day? Not On Super Bowl Sunday.

Take A Sick Day? Not On Super Bowl Sunday.

As Sports Girl Kat says “Super Bowl Sunday is not a time to get sick – especially if you’re playing in the big game.” We’ve seen tons of stories throughout the years of athletes persevering through injury or illness to play in the most important game, meet or match of their lives, and many of them have been in the Super Bowl. In a screwed marketing move, the marketing team behind Vicks created the following info-graphic about not letting anything derail you from playing in, attending or watching the game, as well as the best NFL stories that have the…

On Brady and Buffalo Bashing

On Brady and Buffalo Bashing

For a few years in during my childhood, I thought the most incredible hotel in the world was some generic chain hotel by the Walden Galleria, just outside of Buffalo, NY. My main reasoning for this? It was the first hotel I had ever been to, and despite my mother’s pre-trip warnings, it looked clean and didn’t smell. It also had Canadian television channels, which led 14 year old me to a wonderful dilemma: do I watch the Canadian Pro Figure Skating Championships or Hockey Night in Canada? I eventually grew up, traveled much more, even lived in a hotel…

The Sister Project

The Sister Project

When we were younger, my sister Megan and I had a plan. We would buy the old Bells supermarket on Empire Boulevard in the Irondequoit/Rochester gray area, next to Dan’s Crafts and Things. We would gut it, partition it in half, and operate a gymnastics center and dance studio. My side, the dance studio, would be called “Dance By The Light of The Moon,” after a song reference in our mother’s favorite movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. My sister’s side, the gymnastics center, went unnamed save for a few times where she said she would just call it, “Megan’s Gymnastics.”…
